My name is Grace John Matata. I was born in Mbeya, but grew up in a small town called Kibaha. I come from a single parent family of 3 kids. My mom (Anna John Matata) and my sister and my little brother and I make a small but very close family.
I went to local school in Kibaha then a high school in Dar and lastly a college for my bachelor degree in Taxation in Dar also. I currently work and live with my family and my daughter (Ella-Nyanzala) in Dar.
I remember singing and writing poetry as early as 9 years old. But a real interest in music started in high school after I met a few friends who helped me learn to play the guitar and I eventually ended up writing and playing and singing. A friend introduced me to Music Lab when he heard me sing at work a few times. I went for an audition and I got signed by Music Lab in 2009 and the rest was history.
This album Nyakati, is a story of discovering myself and experimenting with my music and different ways of expressing myself. I had the opportunity to work with amazing people who not only helped me make my music, but also help me grow in it. This is a part of myself that I am putting out there. Hopefully, it will get you through all weathers as it has for me!
Love,
Grace
